Satcoms Systems Engineer
Working for Open Cosmos
Aim high, go beyond! At Open Cosmos we are solving the world’s biggest challenges from space, providing businesses, governments and researchers access to more readily available information than ever before - ready for the challenge? Then read on…
Working in the Satcoms System Team
The satcoms systems team is responsible for modelling, simulating, and continuously optimising the performance of Open Cosmos’ satellite communication infrastructure. This includes the space segment, inter-satellite links, terminals, and ground connectivity, ensuring our end-to-end systems deliver reliable, efficient, and scalable service under dynamic conditions.
We work with cutting-edge technologies such as digital twins, autonomous networks, and large-scale constellation models. The team plays a key role in design validation, mission planning, and performance-driven engineering decision-making.
What will you be doing?
This role supports the definition, architecture, and design of satellite communication systems across multiple product lines. You will translate product vision and customer use cases into system requirements and technical baselines, while coordinating development across platform, payload, ground, and network teams.
Responsibilities include system-level analysis, link budgets, and trade-off studies for RF/optical links and ISLs, as well as managing ICDs, system budgets, and CONOPS. You will contribute to simulations for network performance and capacity, support product planning, and ensure compliance with regulatory and cybersecurity standards. Duties may evolve based on business needs or accommodations.
What you need to be successful
We care about what you can do and how you think. If this role excites you, we want to hear from you, even if you are not sure you tick every box.
Different seniority levels will be assessed for this role.
To succeed in this role, you will need:
- A solid background in systems engineering within the Satcom or space sector, ideally with exposure across the full lifecycle from design to operations.
- Deep technical knowledge of satellite communications systems, including RF payloads, antennas, waveforms, modulation, and link budgets.
- Proficiency in systems engineering methods such as requirements management, system modelling, and verification planning.
- Familiarity with satellite subsystems—such as platform avionics, payloads, thermal, and AOCS—and their integration with communications payloads.
- A clear understanding of Satcom applications, including private networks, IoT, secure links, and 5G/6G NTN.
- Working knowledge of industry protocols and standards like DVB-S2X, 3GPP NTN, and CCSDS.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills for working with cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
- Strong analytical thinking with the ability to turn complex challenges into structured, actionable solutions.
