Systems Security Architect
Working for Open Cosmos
Aim high, go beyond! At Open Cosmos we are solving the world’s biggest challenges from space, providing businesses, governments and researchers access to more readily available information than ever before - ready for the challenge? Then read on…
Working in the Satcoms Systems Team
The satcoms systems team is responsible for modelling, simulating, and continuously optimising the performance of Open Cosmos’ satellite communication infrastructure. This includes the space segment, inter-satellite links, terminals, and ground connectivity, ensuring our end-to-end systems deliver reliable, efficient, and scalable service under dynamic conditions.
We work with cutting-edge technologies such as digital twins, autonomous networks, and large-scale constellation models. The team plays a key role in design validation, mission planning, and performance-driven engineering decision-making.
What will you be doing?
As Systems Security Architect, you will lead the design and assurance of secure architectures across Open Cosmos’ Satcom infrastructure, covering satellites, payloads, networks, ground segment, and user interfaces. Acting as the link between cybersecurity and satellite systems, you’ll ensure the company delivers secure-by-design products and services.
You’ll collaborate with engineering teams to integrate encryption, key management, secure updates, and anti-jamming measures into the stack, shaping the security of next-generation Satcom services, including dual-use and defence-grade systems. Your responsibilities will also include threat modelling, ensuring compliance with standards like ISO 27001 and EU/NATO frameworks, and leading internal security reviews and audits—supporting programs that demand high trust and resilience.
What you need to be successful
We care about what you can do and how you think. If this role excites you, we want to hear from you, even if you are not sure you tick every box.
Different seniority levels will be assessed for this role.
To succeed in this role, you will need:
- Ability to design and implement security architectures for complex, distributed systems.
- Understanding of cybersecurity standards and frameworks, such as NIST 800-53, ISO/IEC 27001, NIS2, ITU IA-PRE, and secure-by-design engineering principles.
- Deep technical expertise across system layers, including satellite platforms, payload interfaces, ground infrastructure, network protocols, and user terminals.
- Capability to perform threat modelling, risk assessment, and security control design, applied across hardware, software, and operational environments.
- Practical understanding of secure communications, including encryption, authentication protocols, key management systems (KMS), and secure routing over satellite and hybrid networks.
- Familiarity with security considerations for inter-satellite links, multi-orbit constellations, and private Satcom deployments, including dual-use or defense-grade systems.
- Ability to define and enforce security requirements throughout system development lifecycles, collaborating with engineering, product, and regulatory teams to ensure compliance and resilience.
- Hands-on knowledge of incident response planning, vulnerability management, and supply chain risk management, especially in high-reliability sectors.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to lead security governance processes and translate technical risks into actionable mitigations for internal and external stakeholders.
